The Baldwin ice hockey team won 5-4 in a shootout Tuesday night over Wheeling Park High School of Wheeler, W.Va.
Overall, Baldwin did a good job passing the puck and taking advantage of the power plays, senior Mack Dempsey said.
In terms of individual efforts, junior Jacob Kaercher had a standout game, junior Gio Falce said.
“Jacob had two goals to tie it up to take us to the shootout,” Falce said.
Senior Nate Buys scored the shootout goal to win the game. Freshman Ian Leuch and sophomore Austin Klein both had goals as well for Baldwin.
Senior goalie Zach Hunt performed well to keep Baldwin in the game, Falce said.
“Zach had a great game,” Falce said. “He had some amazing saves in the shootout, and he ultimately won us the game.”
Baldwin could have done better defensively, using their bodies more to prevent successful attacks, Dempsey said.
“We need to get a little more physical in the defensive zone because they scored a couple of goals that way,” Dempsey said.
The team could improve on shooting more, as Wheeling Park took shots that helped their attacks become successful, Falce said.
The team has started off their season better compared to last season. Their current record is 2-3. The team’s next game is Monday at Penn Trafford at 7:10 p.m.
