Baldwin’s competitive cheer team won first place at regionals on Sunday, securing a bid to nationals in January, where they will compete against the top teams in the country.
The Sunday competition was held in Ohio and included teams from Kentucky and surrounding states.
The Highlanders excelled on the mat portion of the competition, senior Juliana Weiss said.
“This competition went especially well with the mat routine because it’s the best we’ve done at a competition so far this year, and the team executed everything very well,” Weiss said.
The mat team placed first out of four teams, and the game day team placed fourth after a fall.
“The pyramids hit really well, and we only had one stunt fall out of the entire routine,” Weiss said.
They team will continue to perfect their routine for their weekly Sunday competitions.
“We have been working really hard to perfect our routine, and we were super excited to show everyone what we’ve been working on,” junior Lily Weidensal said.
Looking forward to the states and the next competition, the team aims to improve their stunts and make them cleaner.
“The stunts and pyramids are improving, and we’re going to work hard to make them perfect,” Weidensal said.
States will be held in December.
