Baldwin’s competitive cheer team took first place in mat and second place in gameday on Sunday in their first competition of the year at Thomas Jefferson.
The team showcased their abilities through tumbling, stunts, and choreography in their mat routine. Senior Lily Rock said the team was prepared, but can still work on some things for future competitions.
“I think we were prepared, but we can be cleaner,” Rock said.
Bella Edwards, one of three freshmen on the mat team, competed well in her first year flying, Rock said.
“Bella Edwards stood out for being a first-year flyer,” Rock said.
The team has been doing well in terms of preparation, especially compared to last year. At this time last year, the mat team was not ready to compete at this competition, so just performing this year represents an accomplishment.
Both mat and game day routines scored higher than in previous years, Rock said.
Senior Julz Weiss said the team did well in their game day routine, which gives them more confidence and expectations for how they will do the rest of the season.
“I think at future competitions we will do very well since we have the confidence from being successful this weekend,” Weiss said.
Weiss gave credit to freshman Ava Garfold.
“I think Ava Garfold stood out in the mat performance because she got injured during the routine, but still pushed through and hit all of her stunts while putting on a smile,” she said.
The team’s competition season continues on Sunday in Ohio.
