The girls cross country team finished in third place and the boys team finished fourth in the Bald Eagle invitational at White Oak Park in Mckeesport on Saturday.
The top finisher for the girls was sophomore Chayenne Trout, who finished fifth out of 139 varsity runners.
“I ran a 19:39, which is a PR for me,” Trout said. “It is really good to see my times getting faster going into WPIALs at the end of the month.”
Other runners who did well for the girls were seniors Jules Ott, who finished 13th, and Kenzie Bowen, who ran a personal best time and finished 34th.
Junior Becca Gruntz said the Highlanders could work on pacing.
“We need to work on having a better mindset while running and we could work on keeping steady paces throughout the whole race,” Gruntz said.
The top finisher for the boys was senior Alex Castaneda, who finished 23rd out of 200 varsity runners. Castaneda credited sophomore Austin Barrett, who finished 28th, and junior Jack Reichl, who finished 31st.
Castaneda said the boys could have finished more strongly.
“We paced the start of the race well, but we could have held on better to finish top three,” Castaneda said.
The teams’ next race is the Mingo Classic, also known as the Pink Out meet, on Thursday.
