Taylor Swift’s newest album, The Life of A Showgirl, features great music, but cringeworthy lyrics ruin it.
Fans expect incredible lyricism from Swift, but this album is lacking. While Swift promoted this album as her proudest work, it does not live up to that expectation.
Lyrics like, “So we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire,” and “Everybody’s so punk on the internet,” from the song “Eldest Daughter” are disappointing. Most people thought that this song would feature her usual heartbreaking lyricism about the struggles of being an eldest daughter, but the many cringeworthy lyrics are a letdown.
More unfortunate lyrics are featured on “Cancelled,” as she sings “Did you girlboss too close to the sun?” Taylor is showing her age with this lyric, as teens stopped saying this a long time ago. The quote has always been corny, but it is made worse by Taylor saying it so long after the trend.
Despite the cheesy lyricism, the actual music on the album is great, although not always original. The music on “The Fate of Ophelia” sounds quite unique compared to her previous work.
Several songs, however, sound like other artists’ music.
The first few seconds of “Wood” sound a lot like “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5. The music on the title track also sounds very similar to “Cool” by the Jonas Brothers.
Despite the lack of her usual lyricism and unique tunes, The Life of A Showgirl has a deeper story within it. This album is an encapsulation of all of her previous “eras.”
Each song on the album represents a different era or album in her life, from her debut self-titled album to her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department.
The last track on the album, the title track, is the representation of her life throughout all of those eras. It remembers her life as a showgirl, or performing artist, over the years, releasing albums and hosting award-winning tours for years.
