The marching band posted its highest score of the season and qualified for the championship round at Saturday’s PIMBA competition at Norwin, but rain kept them from competing in that final round.
With a score of 80.5 early in the day, Baldwin qualified to perform again as a top 10 band at the end of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association event. But the weather canceled that final performance.
This time last year, the band had an overall score of around 77. So far, they have beaten every band that beat them last year, showing their significant improvement, senior Jonathan Pickell said.
The band’s score was also 3.25 points higher than the previous weekend’s unofficial score at the PIMBA competition held at Baldwin. The band was enthused about this improvement.
“I was really proud of everyone and myself. It was a very happy moment for all of us,” junior Melody Latt said.
Pickell agreed.
“I think we’re just on a better trajectory to do more and be more successful in the later season,” Pickell said.
Despite the weather, the band still performed well.
“It was pretty hot,” Latt said. “So a lot of people were really tired, but I still think they did really well overall.”
Junior Evan Ovitksy stood out for Baldwin, Pickell said.
“Evan Ovitsky had a saxophone solo, and I thought he did it really well,” Pickell said.
Sophomore Sophia Wysocki stood out for the guard, Latt said.
“I think Sophia Wysocki stood out to me. This was her first year on weapon line – as it was mine – but she did really well with the weapon work,” Latt said.
The band hopes to continue to improve for the rest of the season. They should look to work on consistency and keeping focus, Pickell said.
“We can do better at just keeping at what we’re doing, and keeping focused in rehearsals,” Pickell said.
