Shane Michael Boose, whose stage name is Sombr, is a 20-year-old rising artist who started to gain popularity late last year via TikTok.
Sombr demonstrates his skills in several aspects through his new album, I Barely Know Her, proving he is more than just another TikTok artist. He has strong vocals and plays almost every instrument, and they blend very nicely, adding versatility to his sound.
His initial singles “Undressed” and “Back To Friends” contributed greatly to his rise to fame and are currently his top two most-streamed songs on Spotify.
“Back To Friends” was the album’s lead single, which instantly gained traction through TikTok.
And a few months later, “Undressed” was released, giving him back-to-back hits. After this, Sombr’s career was on the rise as he stepped into the mainstream music scene.
Sombr is also a talented lyricist; he wrote every song independently. His ability to write with his heart on his sleeve is something that makes this album so special.
“Canal Street,” the longest track, is certainly worthwhile. He vulnerably opens up about the aftermath of his breakup, missing his ex, and struggling to forget her. The song includes a catchy and melodic chorus: “I try to go on dates / But none of them are you / And I look for girls with your traits / But none of them are you.”
Yet not every song is gut-wrenching. “Dime” is a slightly more positive track about admiration, and it’s done through clever lyrics: “You’re a 10 / and I’m a man that needs a dime.”
Although not everyone enjoys the cliches of a breakup album, Sombr has found his target audience and appears to be expanding to a wider audience as he explores his style.
Overall, this is an extremely versatile debut album. It shows a promising future for the young artist, who is not afraid to step out of his comfort zone and take a risk with a clear vision in mind.
