The Baldwin boys soccer team shut out Blackhawk on Tuesday, 4-0.
Scoring for Baldwin were seniors Zach Lieu, Jackson Presto, Gavin Ries, and junior Manish Biswa.
Ries, who is a co-captain this season, credited Baldwin for the quality of the team’s pressing.
“We were able to possess the ball and go up the field as a team,” Ries said. “We kept attacking in their half for most of the night, which was nice.”
The team was able to capitalize on Blackhawk’s mistakes, Ries said.
“Every time the ball was in the air, they were unable to bring it down properly, so we pressed them as a team and kept capitalizing on their mistakes,” he said.
Lieu agreed.
“We took advantage of their weak backline,” he said.
While Blackhawk made some mistakes during the game, they also were able to recognize flaws in the Highlanders’ defense.
“Blackhawk was able to recognize gaps with our defense, giving themselves opportunities,” junior goalkeeper Eli Schuchert said.
Ries credited Lieu, Presto, and senior Alex Weber for standing out for the Highlanders.
“Zach had the first goal of the game and gave us momentum to carry us throughout the game,” he said. “Alex was dominant on defense, winning balls in the air and on the ground, and Jackson had a goal that allowed us to keep going, and he was doing very well in the midfield.”
Lieu played an essential role, Ries said.
“From the start … we knew that Zach had speed and could get that ball across, and he can shoot and score as well, so we played him the ball as much as we could,” he said.
Schuchert also praised Lieu’s performance.
“Anytime he played the ball, he created a goal-scoring opportunity,” Schuchert said.
Lieu credited Schuchert for having his first shutout of the season.
“Eli had a major save that kept Blackhawk out of the game,” Lieu said.
While the season as a whole has not gone as they wanted, the boys are continuing to progress each game, Ries said.
The team’s next game is against Elizabeth Forward at home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
