Laufey’s new album, A Matter of Time, consists of 14 jazz-pop songs that fit well with the rest of her discography.
Songs on the album cover various aspects of the artist’s life.
“Lover Girl” is similar to Laufey’s previous releases, explaining how she never expected herself to become a typical love-struck girl. She describes how her lover is consistently in her head.
“Clean Air,” meanwhile, is about leaving a toxic person behind and moving on. Laufey describes how she is “Saging my bedroom / Dusting every surface, every corner.” This is a metaphor for her deep cleaning her mind to get rid of any remnants of the person.
On “Snow White,” Laufey describes her chase for unreachable perfection. The lyrics “Sometimes I see her, she looks like Snow White / She’s everything I am but my wrongs are turned to rights” express her desire to look perfect.
Laufey critiques the uprise of “performative males” on “Mr. Eclectic.” She refers to them as posers, experts on foolish things, and pathetic.
Laufey also hid a secret 15th track within the A Matter of Time vinyl. The song, “Seems Like Old Times,” can be found on a seven-inch vinyl in the sleeve of the A Matter of Time vinyl. Two days after the initial album was released, the hidden song was released on streaming platforms.
Overall, Laufey’s album continues her musical style while expanding to many relatable topics.
