Nintendo last week kicked off a new era with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. The console is an update on the Nintendo Switch, which was released in 2017.
The console features a design that is rather similar to the original. But its functionality and capability blow the original Switch out of the water. The console fixes all of the flaws of the Switch – it feels almost like a completely different console.
For instance, the console itself has increased in size for a better handheld gaming experience, but it doesn’t feel unreasonably big. The Joy-Cons, which act as the controllers, are now connected to the console by strong magnets that help keep them securely placed.
The graphics have also improved significantly and all colors pop off of the screen, both docked on the TV or in handheld mode.
Released alongside the Switch 2 and included in some bundles of the console is Mario Kart World. This game perfectly showcases the Switch 2’s capabilities, with handling better detailed and large-scale environments that are better than its predecessor.
The game has a variety of modes, such as the classic grand prix, time trials, and online play. But it also includes a new open world mode that allows players to traverse the island that the game takes place on.
This new mode is rather refreshing, and includes a variety of challenges, courses, and open areas to traverse and explore, which is new to the series.
Also new to the series is the transition between locations. Instead of waiting for the next location to load, players have to drive there themselves, which gives the game a more racing-like feeling as they move through traffic and obstacles. This also keeps the player more engaged in the game.
While it is disappointing that the only true new Switch 2 title out is Mario Kart World, games such as The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom have received Switch 2 editions that upgrade the game and add new features that the previous hardware struggled to run.
Another huge point that is drawing some away from buying the console is its price. It is currently listed at $450, but the bundle that includes Mario Kart World is $500. While the prices of games are also increasing, the console and game is definitely worth it for those who are fans of Nintendo.
The standard prices for games and consoles are increasing anyway due to newer technology and graphics, so the price feels pretty fair.
More games are set to be released for the Switch 2, such as Donkey Kong Bonanza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in the upcoming months.
Ultimately, the Switch 2’s launch has lived up to expectations and has many excited for what is to come of the future of Nintendo.
