This has been a big year for Baldwin spring athletics, with several teams making playoffs and now a number of players being named to all-section teams.
The baseball team made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years and had several players make all-section. Senior Matt Nowicki was one of three Baldwin baseball players who made the first all-section team.
“It was really exciting and thrilling when I found out I was picked for the first team all-section. It felt good to know that all the practices and work for this season paid off,” Nowicki said. “This was my first time being chosen for something like this, which makes it even more special to me.”
Sophomore Aiden Robinson and junior Trey Alario also made the first team for Baldwin. Junior Nico Macurak and sophomore Matt Musial made the second team.
In softball, freshman Camryn Temme had an impressive season. She and her sister, junior Reese Temme, were selected for first team all-section.
“My sister and I both found out at the same time and ran out of our rooms. We were so happy for each other,” Camryn Temme said.
Seniors Gabby Jaquay, Ryley Shaw, and sophomore Melina Defelice all made second team all-section for softball.
As for team highlights from the year, Temme felt that the team worked hard all year and that it showed when they beat Thomas Jefferson.
“We beat TJ, who were the state champions last year, and I think we all played really well,” Temme said.
Junior Dylan Leonhardt made third team all-section in boys volleyball.
“I have never been selected for something like this before and I was really surprised to make one of the teams,” Leonhardt said. “Before I switched positions, I really was not playing and performing up to my personal standards, so ultimately switching positions helped me become more involved.”
Junior Brayden Gremba made the first team for boys volleyball. Junior Alex Kelly and senior Anjal Gurung made the second team, and sophomore Martino Suta joined Leonhardt on the third team.
Leonhardt explained that the team formed great bonds this year.
“Going to IHOP after our first tournament was so much fun,” Leonhardt said.
Defeating Upper Saint Clair on their Senior Night was a season highlight, he said.
“Even though we were a good matchup, we wanted nothing more than to go to their school that night and show them that they shouldn’t mess with us,” Leonhardt said.
In girls lacrosse, senior Aliza Very represented Baldwin in the first all-section team. Junior Olivia O’Malley made the second team, and both junior Lexie Iwaniuk and senior Addison Giglione earned honorable mentions.
Iwaniuk said it meant a lot to her.
“I was really excited and honored, because for honorable mention you have to be a good, coachable kid,” Iwaniuk said.
She saluted the team’s season.
“I am proud of how I developed and how our team developed as a whole,” Iwaniuk said.
