The Last of Us Season 2, on HBO Max, ended with a cliffhanger, with the series looking to finish Ellie’s story in an already renewed Season 3.
The season opens with Ellie and Joel finding refuge in a town in Jackson, Wyoming. Joel’s brother, Tommy, plays a central role in running the town and keeping the community safe. From the very beginning of episode one, it is evident to the viewers that Ellie and Joel have grown more distant as Ellie matures and ages.
The relationship troubles between the two can definitely be related to by many parents and their own children. Even though Ellie is not biologically related to Joel, she still loves him like a father and tries to forgive him when he has wronged her. Both the show and the video game it is based on try to point out the importance of love and forgiveness, as the entire season focuses on the consequences of revenge.
The biggest event of the season is Joel’s death in the second episode, as it prompts Ellie and a new character, Dina, to travel to Seattle to track down his murderer.
The events that follow do not stay 100 percent accurate to the game. As with the first season, this is a rather refreshing change of pace. For instance, early on in the season there is a siege of Jackson as the infected run through a winter storm, and this sequence in particular definitely reminds the viewers of the crazed world that the characters are living in.
However, the season is drawn out at points. And then, just like the previous season, everything feels crammed into the season finale.
While the good of the season outweighs the bad, it could have some viewers questioning whether or not they will watch the final season.
