The final season of Cobra Kai aired in November, and now the movie Karate Kid: Legends has been introduced.
The story follows a young kid from Beijing, Li Fong, who moves to New York City with his mom after his brother dies. Already skilled in kung fu, Li helps train a new friend and enters a karate competition, The 5 Boroughs.
However, Li needs more training to have a shot at beating the repeat champion of the 5 Boroughs. This help comes from his uncle, Mr. Han, and the original Karate Kid, Daniel Larusso, who combine karate and kung fu skills.
The rivalry between Li and the main antagonist, Connor Day, shows similarities to the foes in the original Karate Kid, Daniel and Johnny. It creates a familiar tone and makes it interesting to see who will win the final match.
Li’s relationships with his new friends add comedic relief to the movie. Li teaching kung fu to Mia’s dad, Victor, is a major part of the movie and provides a lot of entertainment.
The plot and action of the movie are very good overall, but there are times where it feels rushed. Having more training scenes with Daniel and Mr. Han teaching Li would have added a better build up to the final fight.
However, the final fight and the other ones that take place are very well done. Each fight scene is filled with action and is well choreographed.
A main contributor to the movie is the scenery. The last fight takes place on top of a skyscraper in New York City, making it visually stunning. So is the scene with Li training on top of a building surrounded by a garden.
Despite the quickness of certain parts of the movie, it is enjoyable to watch and it holds up the standards of the Karate Kid franchise.
