Junior Alex Weber’s main sport is soccer, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming a leader on the track team
Weber has been pole vaulting for the track team since his freshman year, and so far he has been able to achieve a PR of 10 feet 6 inches.
Baldwin’s soccer team plays in the fall, but Weber’s club soccer team, BVB, competes in the spring – at the same time as the Baldwin track team. Balancing both teams can be stressful.
“In the spring, I barely have free time and every day is dedicated to sports,” Weber said.
Senior Max Pegher, a fellow pole vaulter, believes Weber brings strong leadership to the pole vault group and boosts the overall morale of the entire track team.
“He is always showing dedication during practice. He is also always there to cheer on his teammates. Most of the time he is the first kid getting ready, and he rarely misses any practices,” Pegher said.
Pegher recalled a moment that showed Weber’s dedication to the team and his fellow pole vaulters during the South Hills Classic meet.
“The South Hills Classic meet was a very rough meet. We were getting pounded by rain, so the pole vault got moved indoors,” Pegher said. “Even before we got moved inside, Alex was outside there helping set up, and when he did compete, he ended up getting a personal record.”
Another teammate, senior Nico Mizell, agreed with Pegher, saying Weber has consistently boosted the team’s morale.
“Alex is a big contributor when it comes to being there for your teammates. He works hard day in day out so he can get us points during meets,” Mizell said
Although Weber stands out among the track team, his focus is set on soccer. He is a starter on Baldwin’s team and for BVB. He has played the game for years.
“I’ve been playing soccer for Baldwin since seventh grade and club since sixth,” Weber said. “It is really fun to play for different teams at different times of the year.”
He would like to play soccer in college as well.
“I have gotten camp invites from Seton Hill, Mercyhurst, Grove City, and a few other schools,” Weber said. “I would love to play for one of those teams in college.”
Until then, though, Weber also will continue with pole vaulting.
“Pole vaulting is just fun,” Weber said. “I love hanging out with my friends and going to different meets.”
