Senior Jazzy Green is going to states after placing fourth in shot put at Wednesday’s outdoor track WPIAL championship.
Other standouts for Baldwin were junior Vince Broccoli, who placed in javelin, and sophomore Rebecca Gruntz, who placed long jump.
This is Green’s first year placing for states for outdoor track. She did place in indoor track a year ago. She said earning a trip to states for outdoor track during her final year at Baldwin was gratifying.
“It feels great placing for states,” Green said. “It feels like the job is done and I can peacefully graduate and end my high school track career.”
Green’s distance for shot put was 37 feet 1 ½ inch, making it a personal record. She does not feel stressed or pressured moving forward because she had just wanted to make it to states, Green said.
“The next step is nationals and that’s not really in my foreseeable future,” Green said.
Sophomore Jack Reichl competed in the 4×800 relay along with juniors Alex Castaneda, McKinley Beech, and Zach Lieu.
“Our team got the place we were (initially) seeded at,” Reichl said. “We didn’t do too badly.”
Reichl and his teammates have been going a little bit lighter at training to prepare to compete at WPIALs. This is Reichl’s second time competing in the 4×800 at WPIALs.
“It’s normally pretty intense, but we’re still doing the stuff we’ve normally done,” Reichl said.
The jumpers did a particularly good job, according to Reichl, but the whole team had a pretty good performance all around.
The state playoffs are May 23 and 24.
