The Baldwin softball team lost to Trinity 16-6 on Tuesday, missing out on a chance to become section co-champs and instead dropping into a tie for second place.
Senior Ryley Shaw said that the game just didn’t go in Baldwin’s favor.
“The weather definitely had an impact,” Shaw said. “I think that we could improve on controlling the controllables, like facing adversity. The weather was bad, but they also had to play in it as well.”
Working on their demeanor and energy as they head into playoffs also will be key, junior Mackenzie Bowen said.
“We definitely need to improve on our mentality for big games, especially moving forward into the playoffs,” Bowen said.
Shaw said Trinity started hitting early in the game, giving them the advantage before Baldwin could respond. By the time the Highlanders started getting in runs at the top of the fifth inning, Trinity was already up 10 runs.
“We started hitting later in the game, so that definitely helped them,” Shaw said.
Despite the loss, there are some bright spots for the Highlanders to build off of as they head into the playoffs looking for a deep run. Bowen said sophomore Melina Defelice and Shaw both had strong games.
“Ryley and Melina played well. Ryley had strong at bats, and Melina pitched well despite the weather not being in their favor,” Bowen said.
Shaw agreed that Defelice kept a good attitude through the game.
“Melina pitched almost the entire game for us,” Shaw said. “She kept her head up the whole time.”
The Highlanders take on the South Park Eagles today at home at 6 p.m.
