The baseball team scored two runs in extra innings to defeat Connellsville 5-3 on Tuesday.
In the first inning, Connellsville put up three runs, but Baldwin shut them down the rest of the game. In the eighth inning, which is the first extra inning for high school, junior Ethan Helbling hit a ball over the shortstop, knocking in two runs for the Highlanders.
“We struggled early on offense but eventually got it going and played very well defensively,” sophomore Matthew Musial said.
The Highlanders also kept spirits high despite the tough battle.
“We started slow but kept the energy up, and that was a big part in our win,” Helbling said.
Along with Helbing’s tie-breaking hit, senior Nicholas Burg was a key to Baldwin’s success.
“Nick stood out because he pitched seven great innings,” Helbing said.
Going into the next game, the Highlanders look to be more aggressive offensively early on.
The Highlanders play Connellsville again today at home.
