Emerging rap superstar 2Hollis has just released his newest album, Star, and it is quite disappointing for fans of the underground scene.
Star is missing a soul, as it feels massively overproduced but somehow also underwhelming. 2Hollis has made a trendy pop-rap fusion record with heavy electronic and EDM influence, but his sound is just flat-out bland.
It seems like 2Hollis is trying to ride a wave that already crashed and went out, as his style replicates early 2020’s Bladee and Ecco 2k. Despite this blatant swag stealing and 2Hollis’s familial connections in the industry, he can’t make anything of any actual artistic value.
On the track “Burn,” for example, 2Hollis seems to really be reaching for an EDM, bassy electronic sound. However, the beat sounds like an overcrowded dubstep song. “Burn” has too much going on in the beat for listeners to actually tell what’s going on.
Alongside that, the whole rock star aesthetic he begins to reach for at the end of track and throughout the whole album is one of the worst attempts at an overused gimmick. An album called Star, centered entirely around being and becoming a star, while also having a rollout all about being a star, is so tiring.
For instance, the track “Flash” is just 2Hollis whining about how much he yearns to be a star and how important becoming a star is. His repetitive whining about it is tiring and lazy.
The only good thing about this album is the sample of the Minecraft SFX for the firework sound in the intro of the song “Dream Rain Sports.”
