With a career that initially kicked off via demos being rediscovered through thrift stores and 4Chan, the alternative British rock band Panchiko is back with its second full-length project, Ginkgo, which lives up to the standards set by their EPs and demos.
The production and sound are stepped up completely, with this project sounding like an evolved version of the band’s original ethereal, distorted, and spacey sound.
This album screams summer with the amazing vocals of Owain Davies, specifically on the track, “Ginkgo.” The song also includes interesting upbeat instrumentals, creating a genuinely positive mood throughout the track.
Ginkgo only includes one feature, with that being acclaimed rapper Billy Woods on the track “Shandy In The Graveyard.” Woods delivers an exceptional verse perfectly matching the melancholy themes of the track, and it is complemented amazingly by Davies’ vocals.
The improvement of style and sound specifically shows on the song “Vinegar,” which includes the band’s “rotted” sound or their token distortion, which adds a lot of charm to their earlier work.
What is improved specifically is the mixing and the correlation between the instrumentation, vocals, and distortion, making the song much clearer while still maintaining the band’s signature style.
