Daredevil: Born Again offers a great continuation of the Daredevil storyline and characters, while keeping everything fresh.
Born Again is a Disney+ reboot and continuation of the Daredevil Netflix series. It features the same characters, actors, and basic theme.
The series follows Matt Murdock, who is a blind lawyer living in New York City. But he does more than settle court cases: When the sun goes down, Murdock fights crime as the masked vigilante Daredevil, and Born Again presents him with enemies that the audience knows very well.
The show does a good job at returning some familiar faces to the screen, with all their baggage and drama. Along with the known characters, it also introduces some new ones with their own plots and motives.
As with the original series, the highlight of this show is the acting. All of the familiar actors slip back into their roles so well that a new viewer would never know it had been six years since they last played their character. And the new characters are introduced in a way that allows them to fall in nicely.
But while the show is exceptional in many ways, it also has its mixed aspects.
The show could have better pacing at times, with one example involving the villain Muse. This was the character’s first live-action appearance, and the show does not give him a faithful adaptation. He is handled well for the first few times he is shown, but then his backstory is completely changed very randomly, which takes away from the fear and mystery of the character.
The show also relies more heavily on computer special effects, particularly for fight scenes. This doesn’t hit the mark of the authentic, practical effects method of the original series.
Aside from some weird pacing and some CGI, the show is great in many ways. Any fan of the Netflix series should invest their time in Born Again. But they should also keep in mind that it will not be the exact same as the old series they know.Season two of Born Again will be released next spring.
