A Minecraft Movie, long awaited by audiences because of the casting of Jack Black as Steve and the incredibly successful marketing to Gen-Z, provides a great time for fans of the video game franchise.
The story follows a group from our world, Henry, Natalie, Dawn, and Garett, when they go through a portal to the Overworld, which is what the audience knows as Minecraft. After the Earth Crystal breaks, the group, now joined by Steve, has to venture to the Woodland Mansion to retrieve a new Earth Crystal to send the group back to our world.
This is not a heavily plot-driven movie, instead mostly relying on the original video game’s fanbase and creative block-style building gameplay. However, A Minecraft Movie is extremely entertaining. It’s not a movie to be taken seriously; viewers who go into it for the fun of the experience will enjoy themselves.
Throughout the movie, the entire theater, mostly consisting of teenagers, was on edge, ready to cheer, clap, and stomp when an iconic line from the trailer played.
Despite the main cast consisting of five characters, both Dawn and Natalie disappear into the woods for a large chunk of the movie to build a house. It feels unintentional, but it is still frustrating that both of the women in the movie go unused while the plot focuses on the boys’ adventure.
Overall, A Minecraft Movie is incredibly entertaining so long as viewers go in expecting a fun time rather than a plot-driven film.
