Led by senior Aliza Very’s four goals – including the overtime game winner, her 100th career goal – Baldwin girls lacrosse defeated Hempfield 7-6 on Monday.
Very set 100 career goals as her target during her freshman year, and she is happy to have achieved the milestone.
“Scoring my 100th goal in overtime and it being the game winner was the best. It showed that everything I worked so hard to accomplish finally paid off,” Very said.
Baldwin’s other goals were scored by junior Olivia O’Malley, senior Milana Winowich, and freshman Namrata Rai. For Rai, it was her first varsity goal.
Very said O’Malley played a particularly great game for the Highlanders.
“She had an amazing check at the end of the game that allowed us to get the ball onto our side with little time left,” Very said.
The team also showed lots of energy and played strong defense.
Once the game reached overtime, the Highlanders realized they had to dig deeper.
“When we got into overtime, we all recognized that we needed to give as much as we had until someone scored,” Very said.
Hempfield played a strong game, she said.
“Hempfield had quick passing and cutting, which gave our defense some trouble. But ultimately we pulled through in the end,” Very said.
The Highlanders will take on Norwin at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
