Senior Jazzy Green set a personal record and placed first in girls discus at the South Hills Classic, an invitational hosted by Baldwin, on Saturday.
“Jazzy has been really doing well in practice, and our coaches have really been working with her to be patient and wait for a good throw,” junior Anna Plunkett said. “I think our coaches did a really good job about getting us prepared for the weather.”
Freshman Cheyanne Trout also set a personal record in the first leg of the 4×400 relay and the 1600. She also competed in the 3200 and 800.
“She ran her races really smart,” freshman Keeley Duzky said. “Cheyanne especially set a really good time and it’s really impressive with how many events she competes in.”
Junior Alex Castaneda earned a sixth-place finish in the 3200-meter race, senior Anthony DiCesaro earned a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash, and sophomore Charlotte Fauls earned a 12th-place finish in the Long Jump event and a fifth-place finish in the Triple Jump event.
Overall, many Highlanders did well at the meet, Plunkett said.
“It was overall a good day for scoring personal records,” Plunkett said. “Our relay teams also did well today. We have some of the best coaches, and this weekend was great because of how much effort they put in to make sure we have good days.”
Junior McKinley Beech stood out for the boys track team, junior Zach Lieu said.
“McKinley ran an incredible open 800 meters, placing 13th overall,” he said. “He really held his own in a super tough race with really competitive kids, and he did this after running the 4×800 relay.”
Trout said that Freshman Lily Crane stood out at the meet.
“(She) did really well, closing her leg of the 4×400,” Trout said. “She showed a lot of speed and effort for sure.”
The Highlanders will continue to work on their events as the season moves forward.
“I think with our section meets coming up, we need to really work on distributing points through all events,” Plunklett said.
“It’s important that we improve on the 4×400,” Trout said. “Everyone’s running pretty decent times, but I think that there’s a lot of potential to be more competitive with other schools.”
The next meet is the Tri-State Championships at West Mifflin on Saturday.
