The softball team on Tuesday shut out Thomas Jefferson – last year’s state champion – with great defense and pitching, plus a pair of home runs.
Freshman pitcher Camryn Temme threw a one-hit complete game for the Highlanders. She acknowledged afterward that she had been a little nervous, but she made it difficult for the Jaguars, a team that has several players who are D1 commits.
“Camryn Temme had a lot of great pitches and shut them down,” senior Kaylee Smolko said.
The Highlanders’ strong defense, led by outfielder Reece Temme and shortstop Jordan Gerendash, helped keep TJ off the scoreboard.
“There was almost a home run, but Reese caught it against the fence,” Camryn Temme said.
Gerendash created good defensive plays on difficult ground balls.
Home runs from seniors Gabby Jaquay and Ryley Shaw provided the offense.
“We needed those timely hits to keep the game where we wanted it,” Temme said.
The intense matchup created great energy for the girls.
“We were cheering the whole game and picking each other up,” Smolko said.
Temme and Smolko both agree that getting more batting reps during practice is key to more success.
“It’s a big factor for us when we hit in a game vs. not,” Smolko said
The team’s next game is today at 5 p.m. at home against Peters Township.
