Tyler, The Creator stopped in Pittsburgh on Friday to perform his Chromakopia tour to a sold out crowd, and it was a most impressive show.
Tyler hit the stage about three hours after doors opened and was on stage for roughly two hours. The first 10 or so songs that he performed were off of his newest album, Chromakopia. He pulled songs from all of his albums and primarily played his greatest hits.
Something that made this concert sentimental was the fact that Tyler dedicated his performance to the late Mac Miller, whom he was good friends with.
Tyler cleverly designed his stage to resemble the green Chromakopia shipping container, as seen in the music video for “St. Chroma.” The stage also featured screens that shot different camera angles of Tyler during the show, so there would be no trouble seeing him. During his performance, a catwalk connected his “A” Stage to his “B” Stage.
His “B” stage is where he performed most of his classics, and it was uniquely equipped with vinyl records and a record player. He used this to show that he was switching albums and performing different songs from whichever vinyl he put on the record player. It also resembled his “home” and was fully decorated with carpets, a bicycle, and a couch.
The show itself was rather energetic and entertaining the whole way through. Paris Texas, a rap duo, was one of the two openers for the concert. They interacted with the whole crowd and definitely woke them up to get prepared for the next opener, Lil Yachty, as well as Tyler’s performance.
Yachty’s set lasted around 45 minutes and was a perfect fit to open up for this tour. Yachty performed plenty of high energy songs as well as his well known classics, like “iSpy” and “Coffin”. He is known for getting crowds moving and demonstrating great crowd control.
Tyler’s signature brand, Golf, had a pop-up shop just across the street from PPG Paints Arena. The shop contained tour merchandise as well as pieces previously released by Golf. The shop was a green shipping container, a nice nod towards the marketing theme of his latest album.
Overall, Tyler’s performance was really well organized and impressive considering the amount of older songs he performed. He lived up to the high expectations set by his past performances and it was a good night altogether.
