The gymnastics team earned the silver medal in the gold division at states over the weekend, and senior Abby Rexrode finished as the all-around champion in the diamond division.
Other top finishers for Baldwin included senior Sophia Rossa, who took fifth place in the diamond division; junior Ella Scurry, who finished in seventh place in beam and eighth all-around in the gold division; sophomore Charlotte Fauls, who took eighth in both bars and beam in the gold division, and junior Lily Rock, who finished seventh on beam in the silver division.
Rexrode was pleasantly surprised by the team’s silver medal.
“We did really well. We ended up placing second, which we were really shocked by because we weren’t sure if we would get on the podium or not,” she said.
Rexrode said the team’s performance on the beam really helped.
“That boosted our confidence and helped the mood stay positive throughout the whole meet,” she said.
As for her individual performance, Rexrode said it was a great way to end her high school career.
“I scored my highest all-around ever, so it was really exciting to do that senior year,” she said.
Rexrode took second at WPIALs this year, but came back better for states and it showed in her performance.
“My scores were higher this meet and I just had a better meet overall,” Rexrode said.
Rexrode ends her career having won WPIALs and states an impressive three times each.
“I won states my freshman and junior year. Sophomore year I didn’t win, but I’ve scored better and definitely improved” overall, she said.
Scurry said Rexrode was a big part of their team’s strong performance.
“She got first in everything and helped us get second place as a team,” Scurry said.
The seniors in general have been strong this year, and the team will work next year to replace them, she said.
“The seniors have been doing really well and helping a lot with team scores,” she said.
