Senior Ramil Islamov became Baldwin’s first WPIAL champion since 1966 at Canon-Mac over the weekend.
Islamov, who earlier this season set the Baldwin record for most wins in a career, won the WPIAL title in the 145-pound class. He also was the first Baldwin wrestler to reach WPIAL finals in 20 years.
“This is a great accomplishment for me, but I know that I can compete for a state championship,” Islamov said.
By the end of WPIALs, Islamov had improved to 41-0 on the season.
“I have been pretty dominant all year,” Islamov said. “I won almost all of my matches with ease.”
While Islamov has been successful in every match this season, he knows he has to keep his focus to keep performing.
“I just have to make sure that I keep my head in the matches, keep working hard, and stay relaxed the rest of the way,” Islamov said.
Winning WPIALs brings Islamov one step closer to his overall goal.
“I said it at the start of the year, and I want to make it happen. I want to become the state champ for my weight class,” Islamov said.
Islamov will compete in regionals this weekend.
