Senior Ramil Islamov has won the section championship for the first time in his eight years of wrestling.
“I would say I won it pretty easily. I dominated everybody,” Islamov said.
To prepare for the championship, Islamov worked out two or three times a day. In addition to his physical preparation, he also changed his mental approach.
“My mindset changed. I just wanted to be better than everybody,” Islamov said.
In addition to winning the championship, Islamov also qualified for WPIAL championships.
“I’m hoping I can win (WPIALs) too,” Islamov said.
In addition to his growth personally, he thinks the team is going to improve.
“We have a young team, so the guys that are just starting to wrestle are okay,” Islamov said. “And I think that they’re going to get better.”
One player who has already improved a lot is sophomore Mikey Griffiths, who has also qualified for WPIALs, he said.
“Mikey Griffiths got a lot better. He’s doing pretty decent,” Islamov said.
Islamov is hopeful for the future of the team.
“We’re just trying to win as much as possible and trying to make history,” Islamov said.
In addition to Islamov and Griffiths, Ayden Miller and Mahbobullah Amini also will be competing in WPIALs on Friday.
