The boys basketball team closed out the regular season with a win against Elizabeth Forward on Monday.
Seniors Caden Cherico and Jackson Sgattoni stood out during the game. Both have worked hard for the team, senior Nate Wesling said.
Wesling was proud to see his team end the season strong and united.
“We’ve been working the ball a lot and just trying to get the open man and an opportunity to score,” Wesling said.
After their Jan. 3 loss against South Fayette, junior Max Marzina thinks the team has learned a lot.
“It showed us what we needed to do every game to win,” Marzina said. “We’ve been playing fast and it really helps us.”
Baldwin had not won the section since 1986, so that was a goal for the whole team. But it was especially important for the seniors, who have played together for years.
“We’ve always had a tight group,” Wesling said. “But I think this year, the team and our chemistry has been a really important contribution to our success.”
After Monday’s game, the boys were recognized for winning the section and presented with the school section champs banner, with the year 2025 added to it. Marzina appreciates the recognition.
“No one has done that in 39 years, so it’s pretty cool,” he said.
Wesling said that the feeling of winning the section still lingers.
“To wait that long and to have it be us is really special,” he said. “It’s something that we’ll remember forever.”
The Highlanders have their first playoff game at home against Penn Trafford at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
