The Pitt is a strong new medical drama set in a Pittsburgh emergency room, with each episode covering one hour of a single 15-hour shift.
The main character, Dr. Robinavitch (Noah Wyle), suffers from PTSD after losing his best friend and mentor to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now he is in charge of the ER and must keep his co-workers and new med students in line while dealing with his own mental health.
The style of the show allows for plenty of detail. Each patient gets more screen time to tell their story, allowing viewers to connect more deeply with side characters.
There are patients from the first episode whose results have not been shown as of the current episode. This keeps viewers waiting to hear about the condition of various patients while also learning about new patients and their problems.
The show overall seems authentic, with the characters displaying emotions that seem realistic for an emergency room. The Pitt shows the doctors’ mental health and personal issues to help build an appreciation for doctors and all that they do.
It also shows all the chaos, along with the sweet moments, that come with being a doctor in the emergency room.
With the show being set in Pittsburgh, it is a little disappointing that the show is not very specialized in its setting.
One of the few instances where something hinting at Pittsburgh happens when a patient comes in who had fallen onto the tracks at the T Station. She does not speak English, so the episode is spent trying to figure out what language she is speaking so the ER team can communicate with her about what happened.
Despite this being a disappointment for big fans of Pittsburgh, The Pitt is very good so far and is likely to continue improving.
