Domo Genesis’ 2016 debut album, Genesis, provides a great introduction to the rapper’s career, offering relaxing beats and introspective lyricism.
Domo was a member of Odd Future, a hip-hop collective popular in the 2010s that included several rappers who would later go on to prominent solo careers. The growth in his career since that time is shown throughout this album.
This album helped Domo step away from his Odd Future identity and instead take a massive step towards becoming a solo artist.
The beats throughout the album feel mellow and match Domo’s energy perfectly. His flow aligns seamlessly with the lyrics in each song.
Features include artists such as Mac Miller, Tyler the Creator, and Anderson.Paak
“Coming Back” featuring Miller, is the most impressive track. The bass punches in tempo with the beat, which is unusual for a song with such melancholy lyrics. The two absolutely kill the beat, finding every pocket within it.
The lyrics overshadow every other aspect of this album. The authenticity within each verse shows the dedication Domo put into this project.
