Avenging their only loss of the season, Baldwin boys basketball soundly defeated South Fayette in the rematch on Tuesday, 62-36.
The Highlanders had lost to South Fayette, 37-32, on Jan. 3. Getting the win on Tuesday gives Baldwin sole possession of first place in the section.
“I feel great. Everyone knows how bad that initial loss was,” sophomore Evan Golvash said. “We came out ready to play” on Tuesday.
The win moves Baldwin’s record to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in section, with a guaranteed spot in playoffs.
Golvash said some of the players who contributed greatly to the win were seniors Nathan Wesling and Caden Cherico.
“Nate Wesling played very well in the first half. He scored a lot of points for us,” Golvash said. “Caden Cherico got a lot of rebounds and was a good hustle player.”
Golvash said he was able to contribute as well.
“I think I shot well and played great defense,” Golvash said.
Personally, Golvash wants to work on taking fewer fouls. The team also needs to work on some things, he said.
“The team could improve their communication and talking on defense a little bit more – and also just hustling a little more,” he said.
Still, the future is looking bright for the boys, as the team sits in first place. Baldwin has not won a section title since 1986.
“Our coach talks about it every single day,” Golvash said. “Winning the section would be an amazing achievement for us.”
The team’s next game is on Friday on the road against Ringgold.
