Pro/Con: Trump makes waves in first week
The second Donald Trump administration has just begun, and he is off to a strong start.
So far President Trump has already signed a slew of executive orders, ranging from reinstating policies Former President Joe Biden had rolled back, to rolling back Biden policies, to starting to declassify documents related to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy Sr., and Martin Luther King Jr.
But there have been even more important executive orders.
On immigration, Trump signed an order declaring a national emergency at the southern border in regards to illegal immigration. This will open up a vast range of possibilities for the Trump administration, without all the government red tape.
The border was a focus point for all three of Trump’s campaigns, and he spent the last campaign trail heavily criticizing Biden’s weak border policy.
Another order he signed designates cartels and other criminal organizations as terrorist organizations.
This is a step in the right direction in the war on drugs, because – as everyone saw in the last administration – a lackadaisical approach to fighting drugs doesn’t work. Many large cities have rampant drug issues. For example, there is a needle exchange program in San Francisco, which makes drug use easier.
Trump has already started to fulfill his promise to kill Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives and reimplement a merit-based hiring process for the federal government. This will ensure that the government hires based on qualifications and not immutable characteristics.
Another executive order decreed that America will only recognize two sexes – male and female – and this will protect women-only spaces.
Trump withdrew America from the Paris Climate Accord. This is neither good nor bad, since it doesn’t matter what America does when China and India make up almost 40 percent of all emissions.
Finally, the president acted on his long-held belief in fossil fuels, as represented in his previous catchphrase, “Drill Baby Drill.” This will tap into America’s vast amount of liquid gold, as the nation tries to become energy-independent once more.
During his inaugural address on Monday, President Donald Trump made many broad claims, and then announced a multitude of executive actions that he would be putting in place – many of which made little to no sense factually or for the country.
As the New York Times listed, Trump has ended birthright citizenship, pardoned Jan. 6 rioters, withdrew from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, swore to crack down on immigration, and set incorrect definitions of male and female genders.
Trump’s revocation of birthright citizenship has already been brought into question by a federal judge due to conflictions with Section 1 of the 14th Amendment.
Trump made many incorrect statements during his speech, claiming that the Chinese government controls the Panama Canal and that there are only two genders, male and female. He has also overturned a 50-year-old executive order by President Lyndon B. Johnson that told federal contractors to take “affirmative action” to stop workplace discrimination.
He also issued an executive order that attempted to say that gender is determined at birth, while many people instead believe that gender is fluid. However, instead of citing the moment of birth, the order defines female as “a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell,” and a male as “ a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell.” At conception, scientifically speaking, all cells start as female; this is basic biology.
Trump has since followed through on his promise to pardon all 1,500 Jan. 6 rioters. Whether they stormed the Capitol with guns or waited for Former Vice President Mike Pence outside with a guillotine, they have all been relieved of their sentence thanks to the very man who prompted them to take the Capitol building in the first place.
If conviction on 34 felony counts, being found liable for committing rape in a civil lawsuit, filing bankruptcy six times, and making blatantly racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, and white supremacist statements did not make it explicitly clear that Trump should not lead the nation’s president again, his inaugural address certainly did.
The next four years will be incredibly difficult for so many Americans because of Trump. Unfortunately it is obvious that he has yet to learn that it is wrong to incite a violent insurrection. We can only hope that he respects our country enough to obey the 22nd Amendment and not attempt a third term in office.
