Senior Ramil Islamov moved 25-0 for the season and took first place in the 145-pound weight class at the Allegheny County Wrestling Championships on Saturday.
Islamov is now ranked number one in his weight class. He is happy with how his wrestling season is going, but he said he will not get complacent.
“Getting ranked first just shows that I am doing something right,” Islamov said. “But once you get on the mat, rankings do not matter, and I have to keep that in the back of my mind.”
Pushing the pace and scoring a lot of points has been the reason for much success, Islamov said.
While he is undefeated, Islamov thinks that he still has some things to work on.
“I definitely have to work on my stamina for sure,” Islamov said. “Once I get deeper into matches, I have to be able to keep up with my opponent, and stamina plays a big part in that.”
Islamov believes that there is more to wrestling than just having the skills.
“For the rest of the season, I hope that I stay healthy because this would play a big part in reaching my goals,” Islamov said.
The wrestling team’s next match is home against Thomas Jefferson at 7 p.m. tonight.
