Senior wrestler Ramil Islamov won his 114th and 115th career wrestling matches over the weekend, breaking the record for most match wins in Baldwin wrestling history.
The previous record was 113 victories. Islamov was aware beforehand that he had a chance to break it.
“I knew that I was close to getting the record,” Islamov said. “I was counting down the wins, and I was happy that I was able to beat it this early in the season.”
While breaking the school’s all-time record could come with some pressure, Islamov said he felt none of it.
“I knew that if I wrestled to my ability, I would definitely be able to break the record,” he said.
It was a meaningful moment in his successful high school career.
“It just shows me that all of my work finally paid off,” Islamov said. “All the time that I put into this sport, I finally got to show it in my final year and how it has paid off.”
Islamov looks to continue his wrestling career in college next year, as he will be attending West Virginia University, Islamov said.
