Senior Nate Wesling eclipsed 1,000 career points in boys basketball tournament at Geneva College over the weekend, becoming 13th Baldwin athlete overall and ninth boys player to reach that level.
Scoring that 1,000th point brought a relaxing feeling, Wesling said.
“The feeling when the shot went in was pretty cool, and so much weight from my shoulder was lifted,” he said.
Wesling joins his brother, James Wesling, in the 1,000 point club.
“It’s amazing to be the second pair of brothers to score 1,000 points at the school,” Wesling said. “I feel like that isn’t something very common, so it’s cool to be a part of this history.”
The other brothers at that level are Bernie and Rege O’Keefe.
Having reached that goal, Wesling now turns to his next one.“Scoring 1,000 points now means I can chase the all-time scoring record,” he said.
That all-time scoring record is 1,384. The Highlanders have 13 regular season games left before playoffs begin.
Wesling’s teammates were excited for him.
“Seeing Nate get 1,000 was cool because that is something not a lot of people have done at Baldwin,” senior Jaden Duttine said.
Wesling’s milestone was not the only highlight of the Geneva tournament.
Baldwin went 2-0 on the weekend, defeating Beaver, 66-57, and Knoch – which is No. 1 in 4A – 57-55. The Highlanders came together and played team basketball this tournament.
“We shared the ball well and played well as a unit,” Duttine said.
The team hopes to ride this momentum into the rest of section play throughout the season.
“Having momentum means a lot right now, especially going into a big away game tomorrow,” Duttine said.
The Highlanders look to move to 10-0 overall as they go on the road to South Fayette on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
