It is impressive that rap legend Snoop Dogg, at age 53, is still producing music and collaborating with other artists. But his new album, Missionary, disappoints.
The opening song sets low expectations, as it is mostly just instrumentals and BJ The Chicago Kid singing.
This pattern repeats throughout the whole album, with lots of instrumentals and random features. While this is a good way for these unknown artists to get ahead in their careers, they take up more of the album than Snoop Dogg himself.
Despite most of the features being new artists, some well known artists are featured too.
“Last Dance With Mary Jane” uses the original song by Tom Petty and recreates it with rap. While the idea has potential, it does not work out well. Featuring Jelly Roll is just too much. It changes from the original song to rap to country in such a short amount of time.
The most popular song on the album so far seems to be “Gunz N Smoke,” featuring Eminem and 50 Cent.
If the music on this album had featured more well known rappers and more of Snoop Dogg himself, it would have been much better.
Overall, the album as a whole is dull in comparison to past Snoop Dogg albums and will be a letdown to many Snoop fans.
