Baldwin’s fall play, Little Women, has been nominated for five Prime Stage High School Drama Awards.
The nominations include Best Actress, Student Scenic Design and Fabrication, Student Makeup Design and Application, Student Prop Design and Fabrication, and Student Program and Poster Design.
Junior Abby Horn, who played Jo March, was nominated for Best Actress.
“It doesn’t feel real – especially since Prime Stage is pretty serious and they really thought I did well,” Horn said.
Cassidy Cooper, who directed the play, said they wanted to make the play their own, and Horn did just that with her role.
“She put so much of herself and also just so much effort into making sure her performance was authentic and true to the character of Jo,” Cooper said.
Horn saw a lot of herself in her character.
“I feel like I used a lot of my own experiences when building this character,” Horn said. “The main thing about acting is bringing that little bit of realism into each performance.”
Horn watched multiple character analysis videos on YouTube and the recent Greta Gerwig movie to prepare for the role.
“Abby takes her craft as an actress really seriously,” Cooper said. “I’m really proud of her.”
This is the fifth year for the Prime Stage Awards, but it is Baldwin’s first year participating.
“It is a program that celebrates excellence in high school theater for non-musical productions,” Cooper said.
Similar to how the Gene Kelly Awards recognise the musical in the spring, the Prime Stage Awards celebrates plays.
“It is also unique in the fact that all of the elements that you can be nominated for have to be fully student-run,” Cooper said.
The student-led props department built the sets and props themselves, which qualifies them for the nomination.
The winners will be announced on Jan. 11.
