The Baldwin boys swim team won 72-60 and the girls team lost 71-49 in a Monday meet against Keystone Oaks.
Senior Nathaniel McWilliams said Keystone Oaks offered good competition, but Baldwin swimmers like junior Brayden Kuch stepped up during the meet.
“I feel like Brayden Kuch definitely gave this meet his hardest effort, which led him to swim good times and help out the team,” McWilliams said.
Senior Chloe Griffiths said the girls team hopes to improve on their starts and getting off of the block faster. She said that the small size of the girls team is a disadvantage, but the Highlanders still persevered.
“Our biggest weakness is that we are very small and get outnumbered easily,” she said. “Still, everyone was really supportive of each other and definitely tried their best.”
Griffiths said that sophomore Alexis Bendel especially stood out.
“She did really well in her 100 freestyle and hitting her PR’s,” she said.
Overall, Griffiths said that she thinks that both teams will continue to improve as the season progresses.
“We are going at a good pace and I’m seeing times go down,” she said. “Overall I think it’ll be a good season.”
McWilliams said the boys struggle with some little things that they could work on.
“We definitely have to work on our starts and turns during practice the next few weeks. Other than that, the team is looking good,” McWilliams said.
The team next competes at an away meet on Thursday against South Park.
