Baldwin’s Rocket League esports team’s season ended Monday with a 4-0 loss to Reach Cyber Charter School from south-central Pennsylvania in the first round of the playoffs.
Reach won the first two games easily, by scores of 8-1 and 6-0. The third and fourth games were closer, though, with Baldwin losing 3-1 and 3-0.
Junior Zachary Czapko said Coach Nathan Elias was supportive and helped them try to get back in the game.
“Our coach was very helpful throughout the whole process. He told us we had to be aggressive early, and when we started to do so (in the third game), the games were closer,” Czapko said.
Junior Gavin Recker thought the team’s communication could have been better.
“Our communication was not good at all,” Recker said. “If we did better with that we could have won.”
Czapko said Reach had better players than Baldwin, based on player rankings.
“The main issue was our team consists of a Champ, two Diamonds, and a Platinum, whereas their team had at least three Grand Champions,” Czapko said. “We had no idea what we were going against. It was terrifying.”
Even though the Highlanders got eliminated, Recker was happy that the team reached the playoffs.
“I am glad that we made it this far. We worked together all season and were good enough to make it to the playoffs,” Recker said.
Czapko feels confident the team should be fine, with returning experienced players able to help new players.
