The new musical movie Wicked adds a whimsical element to the original Broadway musical.
The story is told from the point of view of Elphaba, the wicked witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, played by Cynthia Erivo. Erivo’s character is born as a green citizen in their town, Munchkinland, and her father, Governor Thropp, has a strong hostility towards her because of her green color.
Elphaba’s younger sister, Nessa, begins her schooling at Shiz University, where there is a new student named Galinda, also known as Glinda, who is played by Ariana Grande. Glinda is contemptuous at first and nominates herself as the most popular girl, but her character definitely gets better throughout the story.
On the other hand, Elphaba has powers that tend to take over when she gets emotional, making her stand out to Madame Morrible, a great sorceress who rarely wastes her time teaching a seminar in the school. However, Morrible believes Elphaba will be a great student, so she volunteers to teach her.
Glinda is shown much more after this scene because she has to room with Elphaba, which begins their relationship with one another.
The cinematography is great and contributes to the magical fantasy genre of the movie. Erivo’s and Grande’s voices go well together and complement each other throughout the entire movie.
The aesthetics enhance the movie, as do the actors, who are passionate throughout the musical.
However, this is just the first part of the musical movie, which is disappointing because it ends with a cliffhanger. The second part is supposed to be released in November 2025.
