The Baldwin Valorant esports team lost to the Summit Hilltoppers of New Jersey 2-0 on Tuesday.
In Valorant, the attacking team attempts to plant a spike on the opposing team’s side while the defenders try to prevent it. The teams then switch their roles as defenders and attackers after halftime. The teams play best-of-three competitions.
Assistant Coach Jeffrey Weir said the game was pretty close throughout, but Baldwin had a few rounds that didn’t quite go their way, which led to the loss.
“They were very good at catching our team’s rotations and picking off our players who were lurking around the map or playing solo,” Weir said.
The Highlanders have room for improvement, he said.
“From what I could see, the team needs to work on their post-plant positioning and coordination,” Weir said.
The Hilltoppers played well as a team and they had better strategies, sophomore Joseph Maiers explained.
Baldwin also could have communicated better, sophomore Ben Neuhaus said. Maiers agreed.
“We played hefty, but it wasn’t our best match,” Maiers said. “We didn’t have specific highlights compared to our other matches.”
Maiers and Neuhaus both agree that eighth-grader Aidan Giamartino stood out for Baldwin.
Playoffs begin next week in Valorant, but a game date has not been set.
