Released in 1977 by the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, Rumours is their 11th studio album and their biggest hit. It sold over 40 million copies worldwide and is the ninth-most bought album of all time.
Mac is known for the whimsical rock sound of their music, and this album executes it perfectly.
Thanks to TikTok, more and more people have been listening to “Silver Springs” over the past couple of weeks, but that is not the only song that’s a hit.
This raises the question of whether people know what else this album has to offer – like the song “Dreams.” This song is the album’s most streamed song, running at 1.6 million streams, and was a number one hit in the U.S. back in 1977.
Singer Stevie Nicks wrote the song during a difficult period for the group. The relationship between her and singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham was ending. Bassist John McVie was divorcing his wife – singer/pianist Christine McVie – and drummer Mick Fleetwood was also divorcing his wife.
Buckingham’s “Go Your Own Way” is a piece that adds to “Dreams,” describing the other side of the breakup from his standpoint. “Oh Daddy,” meanwhile, is one of the saddest songs on the album, as McVie feels dependent on her lover, wants to leave, but lacks the inner strength to do so.
This album sounds great from the first listen. But paying attention to the lyrics allows listeners to realize what the whole album is about, and why it is a form of art.
