Baldwin’s Rocket League esports team defeated Allentown’s William Allen High School, 3-0, on Thursday.
In the best-of-five competition, Baldwin won 4-0, 5-1, and 6-0.
In the first game, junior Braydon Parker scored three goals and had seven shots, sophomore Ethan Green had one goal and two assists, and junior Zach Czapko had one save.
“The team did well in converting scoring opportunities yesterday. We put on a number of good shots that were key in us winning,” Coach Nathan Elias said.
In the second game, junior Gavin Recker had two assists and two shots, Green had three goals and five shots, and Czapko had two goals, one assist, and five shots. In the third game, Parker had two goals, one assist, and three shots, Recker had one goal, three assists, one save, and four shots, and Czapko had three goals, one assist, and four shots.
“Over the past couple of weeks, the overall communication has improved a lot. It definitely makes it easier to play when you know what your teammates are thinking,” Parker said.
Elias said Czapko in particular had a strong showing.
“He has improved a lot over the course of the season and it showed in the game yesterday. He had a very nice drop-down shot yesterday that he would not have been able to convert earlier in the year,” Elias said.
Parker agreed, Czapko is getting more comfortable and improving his shooting accuracy skills.
Czapko spoke highly of the team’s ability to capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes.
“In my opinion, punishing bad plays that they made, and capitalizing on openings from said plays, allowed us to put the pressure on them,” Czapko said.
The Highlanders’ next game will be next Thursday. The opponent has not been determined.
