Baldwin’s Rocket League esports team lost to Canon Mac, 3-0, on Thursday.
The Highlanders had difficulties in several areas.
“We struggled with communication when taking shots or defending our opponents,” junior Zach Czapko said.
Coach Nathan Elias said the team needed to improve their aerials and contests.
“We need to continue to practice our aerial play and being fast to contest shots, as well as not overcommitting too many players on one shot,” Elias said.
Along with the difficulties with the plays, one of their top players was missing.
“Our team was missing our best player yesterday, Braydon Parker, so we struggled to keep up with the aerial plays from their best players,” Elias said.
Although the team lost, Czapko said the team played to the best of their abilities.
“I was our key defender and Gavin Recker was our main offensive threat,” Czapko said.
Czapko said the team’s air attacks were especially strong and they also kept the walls and ground secure.
The game’s objective is to score as many goals as possible before the five-minute timer goes off, although if there is a tie the game will go into sudden-death overtime. The way to score goals is similar to soccer: A goal is made once the ball crosses the other team’s goal line and there is no such thing as out of bounds.
The team’s next competition is next Thursday. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
