Running out of TV shows and movies to stream? The Purbalite is here to help, with another installment of our What to Binge Watch feature.
The Crown is a drama series that details the adult life of Queen Elizabeth ll and how her family shaped Great Britain in the second half of the 1900s.
The earlier seasons detail how Elizabeth ll dealt with the shock of her father’s death and her newfound roles as queen and new mother, while the later seasons shift to her oldest son, Prince Charles, and his scandal-filled marriage to Princess Diana.
Elizabeth was nowhere near ready to become queen when she ascended to the throne at 25, and the show highlights how she deals with sexism and miscommunication with the public. She is constantly pressured to uphold the images of both her and her family, and in the later season that pressure shifts to Princess Diana.
Diana is loved by the public but cannot seem to gain her husband’s love as well. Shortly after her marriage begins, rumors of infidelity and scandal come from both sides until their eventual divorce.
What makes the show such a good watch is the attention to detail and accuracy. While the viewers cannot possibly know what went on behind closed doors, the show stays almost entirely accurate with the timeline and actions that occurred in public.
The show is interesting because it is informative and provides historical facts, but also is entertaining with its drama and emotion. The casting is also a big factor in its success, since all of the characters look similar to the real people.
