Playoff loss ends positive season for girls tennis team

The girls varsity tennis team lost 5-0 to Mt. Lebanon on Monday in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.

Lebo’s tennis team is talented, senior Julia Johnson said.

“Mt. Lebo is the best team in their section, so no one was close to winning their set for Baldwin,” Johnson said.

Though this matchup means the girls are out of the playoffs, members of the team had positive thoughts on the season as a whole. Junior Ava Faust was particularly happy with the number of new players who showed up and played for the team this year.

Senior Emily Nowicki also said there were positives to take from the season.

“We had a great season overall, and have played well throughout the entire season,” Nowicki said. “We made it to the playoffs last year too, so we definitely had the experience.”

Nowicki gives credit to the team as a whole. She believes the chemistry played a huge role throughout the season.

“We had great bonds with each other, which is one of the reasons why we improved as the season went on,” Nowicki said.

Faust also said the team felt truly like a home for her.

“This year the team felt more like family,” Faust said

Looking forward to next season, Faust feels that there are certain aspects of the game that the team can work on to get better for next year.

“I feel that specifically double players have to work on their communication skills. I feel like that’s something that can alway be improved,” Faust said.

Nowicki has enjoyed being on the team.

“We made so many memories,” Nowicki said. “My favorite match was when we played against Allderdice because it was very nice and we made friends with the girls from the other team.”

Johnson feels that even though the team is losing talented seniors, they should still be a good team next season.

“I’m a senior so this is my last year. However, I do believe the girls will do well next year,” Johnson said. “They are all good and have gotten a lot better over the season, and by the time next season comes they will be even better.”
