The Baldwin boys soccer team defeated Shaler 2-1 on Saturday.
Junior Gavin Ries said Baldwin played well in many different ways.
“Something that went well Saturday was us scoring goals, playing the full 80 of the game, and not slowing down,” Ries said.
Several Baldwin players stood out, Ries said.
“Three people that played amazing were Anthony DiCesaro, Alex Weber, and Will Penrod. Anthony was scoring for us, Alex was amazing at moving the ball and winning headers in the midfield, and Will was shutting down Shaler’s offense, which helped us win,” Ries said.
Still, Shaler posed some trouble early on.
“Shaler did a good job of moving the ball around and creating good scoring opportunities,” Penrod said.
Shaler prevented a lot of Baldwin’s offense in the first half while scoring themselves.
“Their goalie denied us from scoring until the second half, and the goalie had very good punts and goal kicks,” Ries said.
After halftime, though, it was all Baldwin.
“We really pulled it together in the second half after being down 1-0, and we ended up scoring two goals,” Penrod said.
Baldwin was able to create many scoring opportunities in the second half, but not all were successful.
“I had the ball in the second half. I kicked it to Anthony. I thought he was going to score there, but the goalie blocked it. That was probably the best part of the game for me,” senior Abison Duhal said.
Baldwin is now 2-11 and sixth in the standings. Their next game is Thursday at Ambridge.
