A Tribe Called Quest ended their decade-long run in 2016 with the standout album We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.
This album was released eight months after the death of Phife Dawg, who was a founding member of the group. This was the final addition to Tribe Called Quest catalog, and is packed with great features from such artists as Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and Andre 3000.
This album ranks high in the discography of A Tribe Called Quest. On it, they stride into the newer generation of rap, all while keeping their original style of conscious rap and alternative rap.
One of the standout tracks is “Kids,” featuring Andre 3000. The song showcases shifts in drum patterns that match the rappers’ quick flow transitions. Meanwhile, the steady synth cadence adds character and smoothness, leading seamlessly into the hooks.
The group went all in for this album, blending erratic rapping on some tracks with melodic flows and samples that were outside of their usual style. This final project not only honors Phife Dawg’s legacy but also shows love to the culture.
Through their evolution, Tribe proved they could embrace new sounds while staying true to their core message, bridging the gap between eras of hip-hop.
