Mr. McMahon is a Netlifx documentary that tells the story of the billionaire who made pro wrestling what it is today – without shying away from the dark side of the business and the deeply flawed man that Vincent Kennedy McMahon truly is.
The documentary covers McMahon’s childhood through his resignation from his wrestling empire, and what that means for the future of the business. Much of the documentary focuses on how he built the WWE into a billion-dollar company from a small territorial promotion.
A cutthroat businessman, McMahon destroyed the territory system in wrestling and made WWE a national promotion, killing off the competition. The documentary covers the Monday Night Wars with WCW, in which the rival promotions competed for viewership on the same night.
Most importantly, the docuseries covers McMahon’s legal troubles. He has faced many accusations of being a sexual predator, most notably from former referee Rita Chatterton and Rena Lesnar, better known as the WWE superstar Sable.
In addition to those allegations, the series covers United States V. McMahon, a court case in which McMahon was accused of supplying anabolic steroids to the wrestlers. He was found not guilty.
McMahon also stepped into the ring, playing the role of a psychotic billionaire with little to no regard for anyone around him, motivated only by money. A key part of the documentary is finding where the line between the character of Mr. McMahon ends and the real McMahon begins.
For die-hard wrestling fans, this documentary provides little to nothing new besides the interviews.
Regardless, it is still entirely worth watching to hear the perspectives of the likes of John Cena, The Rock, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and “The Immortal” Hulk Hogan, as they look back to the days when they were the stars who made the WWE the entertainment juggernaut that it remains today.
